Job Description

The Battery Test Engineer will collaborate with a small team of engineers to perform various types of lithium-ion battery inspection, disassembly, testing, analysis, and reassembly. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and motivated problem-solver with strong written communication skills. Furthermore, the candidate must be able to prioritize and execute tasks effectively and independently in a fast-paced, startup environment. These capabilities will enable the Battery Test Engineer to successfully design, plan, execute, and document battery tests with autonomy.

 

Job Functions:

  • Disassemble, test, and reassemble lithium-ion battery packs

  • Evaluate packs and cells for damage; assess technical specifications; document findings

  • Support development of battery test plans and advancement of battery test methodologies

  • Set up and perform battery cell tests

  • Record, process, analyze, and report on cell test data

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with health and safety standards

  • Efficiently and effectively document test results and methodologies

 

Required Experience & Characteristics:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in engineering (e.g. chemical, electrical, mechanical, materials science, etc.) or other technical discipline is preferred. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in the same fields and 2+ years of professional or academic research experience with lithium ion batteries are also sufficient.

  • Deep understanding of lithium ion battery operation, characterization, and degradation

  • Familiarity with at least one of the following: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), hybrid pulse power characterization (HPPC), ultrasonic battery testing, other techniques for detailed characterization of battery health, accelerated battery aging, battery failure analysis

  • Ability and willingness to switch frequently between desk work (e.g. coding, documenting, and analyzing data) and hands-on work in a machine-shop environment (e.g. battery disassembly, testing, and reassembly)

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Ability and willingness to work with high-voltage battery packs while adhering to safety procedures

 

Desired Experience & Characteristics:

  • 2+ years of experience with operation of battery test equipment (e.g. Arbin, Chroma, Bitrode, etc.) for cell characterization

  • Familiarity with neural network design and training

  • Familiarity with battery management system (BMS) programming and/or installation

  • Familiarity with design and/or manufacturing of battery packs and/or energy storage systems

  • Familiarity with CANbus communications protocols

  • Proficiency with Matlab, Python, C, Solidworks, and/or Fusion 360

  • Up-to-date understanding of safety codes and standards for used battery testing (e.g. UL #1974) and energy storage systems (e.g. UL #1973 and #9540)
